Since I decided to talk about transitioning our closets earlier this week, I have now made the executive decision that it is time to talk about skincare transitions too. In a few weeks it is going to be itch fest galore. Said no one, ever. Autumn may be one of the most prettiest times of the year, but it also brings cold air and super dry skin. If you're anything like me, dry skin is much worse than satan or your best frenemy. It is brutally painful and always SO annoying. Luckily, I have found a few products to help us cope with it this year. Continue reading if you'd like to save your skin too!
Toner
Believe it or not, many toners contain some type of alcohol or alcohol substitute which can really hurt, damage, and dry out your skin. It is important though that you do use one. Toners are normally looked at as the palette cleanser for your face. They get rid of any excess make-up that may be left on the skin, but it still prepares the face for what is yet to come. It is important to look for a toner that contains hyaluronic acid (super hydration booster), glycerin, saliac acid, and is alcohol free.
SPF
Even though we are transitioning from summer to fall, your skin STILL needs SPF! You may not be getting sunburned anymore, but the UVA rays that cause skin cancer and premature wrinkles are still just as powerful.
Thicker Moisturizer
Now is the time of the year to amplify your moisturizer with a powerful hydrator. Try to look for moisturizers with ceramides in them. Ceramides are, "essential and healthy fatty acids that occur naturally in the skin but need to be replenished during the colder months."
Add a Serum
Depending on how dry your skin gets, a thick moisturizer may not be enough. Serums contain smaller molecules than moisturizers. These moisture-boosting properties can penetrate deeper into the skin leaving it more hydrated.
Use More Body Lotion
With cold weather comes very itchy and dry uncomfortable skin. In order to avoid this, it is very important to try and moisturize everyday. If not, every other day. "Moisturizers provide a protective barrier over the skin, allowing it to retain hydration and draw hydration to the outer skin layer."
Listen to Your Skin
It is important through any skincare transition that you pay attention to how your skin is reacting to any new products you've incorporated into your routine. When transitioning from summer to fall, try not to make too harsh or sudden changes to your skin or routine. Start by replacing your a.m. routine and gradually introduce your p.m. routine. Keeping an eye on your complexion and correcting any changes that may need to be altered is important. By doing this, it will allow for an easier transition while keeping your skin happy, healthy, and not putting it in shock.
Stay stylish,
xoxo Jen Stack
