How to keep your skin in check this summer

Even though summer is one of the best times of the year, it'd be unkind for me not to share the unique ways the shining sun and blazing heat can damage your skin. Along with switching your wardrobe, you may consider changing up your skin care routine as well. This is not a bad idea only because while the season is changing, it is important to protect your skin against the environmental changes which impact the way your skin behaves. Here are a couple ways to protect your skin this summer.

  1. Exfoliate!

Exfoliation is the removal of dry and dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. If you don't get rid of these dead skin cells they will most likely sit on your skin giving it a dry and dull appearance. It does not matter how much you moisturize, you will never have glowing skin if you don't exfoliate. Additionally, it is one of the most important aspects of your home skincare routine for face and body. Not only does exfoliating help with skin problems, but it also increases blood circulation which helps achieve healthy and glowing skin. It is recommended to exfoliate no more than twice a week. Even though it is important to remove dead skin, it's also important to not strip away too many oils off the skin either.

2. Sunscreen is a Go-To

Even though we need a daily dose of Vitamin D, that's only for about 20 – 30 minutes. When you don't wear sunscreen, you're allowing those harmful UV rays to damage your skin. You may not see it now, but as you continue to age, the wrinkles on your skin will become more noticeable because of previous improper skincare. Not only does sunscreen prevent premature aging, but it prevents the risk of skin cancer as well. Most women use sunscreen for beauty reasons but they don't know that they're also taking the health benefit from sunscreen to an advantage. Wearing sunscreen daily, shields your skin from the risks of various skin cancers – especially melanoma.

3. Water is Your BFF!

With higher temperatures and more time outside commonly leads to internal dehydration which results in headaches AND dizziness. Our bodies are 60% water and proper hydration is essential for overall health. If a person does not keep up their water intake especially over the summer their thinking and cognition will suffer. In order to have proper hydration you should make sure that you are truly drinking enough water. This can be done by drinking half of your body weight in ounces. Another good way to stay hydrated is to invest in a reusable water bottle. If you remember to keep the bottle nearby, you're more likely to drink out of it. Plus reusable water bottles these days are super cute, who wouldn't want one?!
